The Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP)

STEP at Fordham University is an exciting and rigorous academic enrichment program designed to help prepare junior high and high school students for licensed professions and scientific, technical and health-related careers.  STEP also seeks to increase the representation of historically underrepresented minorities and economically disadvantaged people in these fields. The RETC collaborates with STEP to provide LEGO Robotics training for Junior High School students from the local community. During July and August, students worked in teams to build and program their robots to perform a series of tasks. Although the tasks were the same, the means for the robots to carry out their duties varied. On the last day, the students put their robots to the test in a heated, but friendly competition.

Robotics are used to teach the necessary skills for academic success, such as mathematics, scientific method, higher-ordered thinking, and the importance of experimentation, and stresses teamwork and collaboration to complete tasks.
